Maverick Sabre

On Thursday the 8th of March the Anson rooms Bristol began to fill up with excited members of the public ready to watch the legendary Maverick Sabre. Doors opened at half 7 and the queues formed immediately for the sold out gig. Not only was everyone absolutely buzzing for Maverick but the excitement was heightened when it was announced that Ms Dynamite would be the warm up act along with another young female artist none other than Aruba Red who is an unsigned artist with music available on iTunes. She performed with Maverick’s guitarist Charlie.

Ms Dynamite came on at around 9 o’clock when Aruba had sang 3 songs and got the crowd ready for more. The atmosphere was ecstatic when Ms Dynamite was on; she was lip-syncing to most of the songs, but she rapped over the top which was incredible. Accompanying Ms Dynamite was Faith Sfx. Now I do admit I didn’t recognize his name but when he got on stage he was amazing, one of the best beat boxers I have ever heard. The noises that came out of his mouth, it would have been impossible to tell if it was music or his voice if you couldn’t see him.

There was a break in between Ms Dynamite and Maverick Sabre which did deflate the mood somewhat as everyone was getting restless but when Maverick came on the crowd went wild. He is honestly something else and his backing singer really complimented his resonant voice. Maverick interacted with the crowd saying ’its just me and you Bristol’. First Maverick sang some of the more unknown songs and told the crowd about why he had written them and the story behind them. He kept asking for the lights to be turned up on the crowd so he could see us all, the gig was really personal and added to the atmosphere immensely. At the beginning of one of his songs he asked everyone to hold up something that would light up, so the room was filled with lighters and phones, it sent a shiver down my spine. He then sang Acapella and everyone fell silent and just watched him. The sound of his voice with no music, no instruments, no electronic devices but just his voice will stay with me forever. He is truly unique and I can honestly say he has that certain something that sets him above the rest. He enjoys performing and is able to transmit the feeling to all who watch. A great experience.
